Living With Hypertension : woman shares her personal experience

High Blood Pressure (hypertension) is one widespread health condition that affects many people. Researchers and healthcare specialist explain that high blood pressure is a common condition in which the long-term force of the pressure against the artery walls is higher than expected to the point where it eventually begins to cause health problems and heart disease. More technically, blood pressure is considered to be high if it reads above 140/90mmHg.

People living with high blood pressure will require taking drugs to control their blood pressure. Most of them will actually need to be on antihypertensive drugs for the rest of their lives to keep their blood pressure within normal range. This can be quite uncomfortable and challenging for many, especially those who have to take drugs for other health conditions like diabetes in addition or don’t have sufficient money to buy the routine medications. Others also tend to stop taking their drugs when they begin having an improved blood pressure reading without even reviewing it with their doctor.

One research conducted stated that one of the behaviors that predict successful treatment or reduces the severity of the illness is to adhere to the therapeutic recommendations provided by the physicians to the patient. Although a significant amount of expenses and time is spent on disease diagnosis, many patients neglect the recommended diet regimen or further suggestions. Many individuals experience several problems in adhering to long-term treatment. Reports suggest that poor adherence to treatment can increase the cost of the treatment for hypertension by 15%-20%, leading to frequent hospitalization, referring to the emergency rooms and admission to the intensive care unit

Medtrend Health sought to find out how patients who suffer high blood pressure, more fondly called B.P patients in Nigeria, cope with adherence to their routine drugs. We had a chit-chat with a B.P patient who chose to be anonymous and she shared with Medtrend Health correspondent how she has been surviving with the disease for over 20 years now.

“This ailment is not an easy one because it can knock you down at any given time if you dont take the necessary care,” she replied when asked how she has been faring with the condition all these years.

She further added that, “I have my special monitor which i use to check my blood pressure. My prescription is from the doctor not self medication. Whenever the B.P is high i take my drugs immediately and get proper rest. And if its not high, I dont take any drug at all. But one thing is i don’t joke with my resting time.”

When she was asked about her medical visits to the hospital she admitted that it was not very regular. “Well, since I can control my B.P, I don’t do regular medical visit. I always make sure I check myself and to me, it is not dangerous. The last time I visited the hospital was about 2 to 3 years ago but I will plan to go for another visit just incase there is change of drugs or any other new special medical advice from the doctor and would also make it often.”

General Advice

People can live healthy lives with hypertension by adhering to the right medications prescribed and life style changes recommended. “The disease is very dangerous if you don’t take proper care of yourself because it can bring you down. Take myself for an example, I have been managing it for over 20 years and now I know how to stabilize it. So if I can, you too can,” she advised others as she concluded speaking with Medtrend Health correspondent in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
